Grandmaster Flash & The Furiou Message from Beat Street: The Best of Grandmaster Flash, Melle Mel & the Furious FiveSe flere produkter fra AmazonIs there a rap fan out there who didn't like "The Message"? It took rap in an entirely new direction: while others were content to ride the "Double Dutch Bus" down to the disco, the Furious Five spoke out about social decay. The chorus of "The Message" ("Don't push me, 'cause I'm close to the edge / I'm trying not to lose my head / Sometimes it makes me wonder how I keep from going under") describes the effect of Reaganomics in ways that Dan Rather never could. Of course, Grandmaster Flash and company weren't against partying. In fact, they cut some of the best party tracks in the genre's history ("Freedom," "The Birthday Party"), along with some battle raps ("Step Off," "Showdown") to complete the package. Copyright restrictions probably kept the beat-edit classic "The Adventures of Grandmaster Flash on the Wheels of Steel" off the track listing. Original Soundtrack HoneySe flere produkter fra AmazonAnyone who cares about the state of beats will want this soundtrack companion to the Jessica Alba-starring hip-hop saga, Honey. The inventiveness of rhythm and sound on Honey's first half dozen or so tracks makes for its own drama and should even provide some hope to those who bemoan the genre's recent lack of boundary pushing. Missy Elliott's "Hurt Sumthin'" is a fitting start to the CD; it's another of her and Timbaland's forays into minor-key funk-exotica and a match for anything on her own albums. Rodney Jerkins' setting for Blaque's independent-women manifesto "I'm Good" stomps its percussive way to the top of the must-play list, while further offerings from Mark Ronson (with guests including Ghostface Killah) and the duo of Erick Sermon and Redman keep the progressive-party feel going. The disc's second half winds down into more standard-issue ballad fare, but even then, the flow feels correct--a natural winding down from what the first sizzling cuts began. --Rickey Wright Fragt: Ukendt! |

James MillionairesSe flere produkter fra AmazonJames, clearly reinvigorated by the chart-topping success of their 1998 Best Of collection, are playing to their strengths again on Millionaires. The occasionally abstruse experimental noodlings that have punctuated their career have been left behind, and Millionaires amounts to 12 tracks which all sound determined to make the album's title a self-fulfilling prophecy. All the mannerisms which served to make James the biggest band in Britain in the early 1990s are present: clattering rhythms that might have been designed to serve Tim Booth's wasp-in-shirt dancing, expansively sweeping arrangements (Brian Eno co-produces), and almost annoyingly catchy choruses: "Crash", "I Know What I'm Here For", "Shooting My Mouth Off" and "We're Going To Miss You" are all spiritual--and worthy--successors to "Sit Down" and "Sound". --Andrew Mueller Fragt: Ukendt! |

Placebo Black Market MusicSe flere produkter fra AmazonForget the crumpled post-coital comedown of Without You I'm Nothing. Placebo's third album, Black Market Music, sees the London trio with a predilection for debauched hedonism back at the top of their form. Molko has wised up, realised that there's more to life than hedonism--and no, it doesn't mean he should have to give up all his fun. He's discovered limitations (see the harder, groove-based single "Taste In Men" and the truly chilling "Commercial For Levi" where he states "I understand the fascination/I've even been there one or twice" before going on to add "please don't die"). One indication of Placebo's re-birth is the storming collaboration with psychedelic US rapper Justin Warfield "Spite & Malice" which rocks harder than a thousand "Brick Shithouse"s. There are songs like the profane New Order-esque "Special K" with its female pop harmonies, and meaty bass courtesy of supreme queen Stefan, where Placebo sound even more spiteful and resonant than before. The more contemplative "Passive/Aggressive" brings the pace down a little, before the dance-orientated "Black-Eyed" ends everything soaring into the stratosphere once more. If anybody's going to rule them, she pretty much proclaims by way of "SOS," a song no less irresistible, intoxicating, and all-out cool than 2005's "Pon de Replay," off her debut, she's it. That's not to say this new disc is anything like its predecessor overall. Where Music of the Sun was mostly what its title suggests--a romp through an anglo-friendly island with no sunscreen required-- A Girl Like Me is more reflective and a little rueful; you get the sense it was crafted in part to show her range, with executive producer Jay-Z guiding her through it gracefully. "Unfaithful" is a noir-ish testing of the R&B waters, and it goes so well that Rihanna wastes no time skinny-dipping her way into the deep end--"Final Goodbye," "P.S. (I'm Still Not Over You)," and "A Million Miles Away" all betray juicy bits of Beyonce. Back in barefoot bikini-girl land, though--a territory that covers roughly half this disc--the party's still going strong. Rihanna gives dancehall legend Sean Paul a run for his money with the bouncing "Break It Off," and "We Ride" makes you want to roll down the windows and stick your head out the passenger side.
