Crowded House Farewell to the World: Live at Sydney Opera HouseSe flere produkter fra AmazonOh, the title wasn't quite as apocalyptic as all that: after Farewell To The World, their final concert together as Crowded House, New Zealand brothers Neil and Tim Finn continued to make music, sometimes even together as The Finn Brothers. For fans, though, this 24-song set -- recorded at the Sydney Opera House in front of 100,000 people -- should stand head and shoulders above the band's extensive back catalogue of bootleg live recordings. The hits, as you might expect, are present -- "Four Seasons In One Day", "Fall At Your Feet", and what's perhaps the group's finest moment, a kaleidoscopic "Pineapple Head". (Less expected is a bit of X-rated onstage banter, which finds drummer Paul Hester claiming to have "deposited a bit of sperm in Sydney town from time to time" -- nice!). Elsewhere, the band show off their admirable chops, "Hole In The River" branching off into the sort of jazzy, prog-tinged instrumental break that'd shame most jam bands. Xzibit RestlessSe flere produkter fra AmazonFresh from a brace of high-profile cameos (on Dre's 2001 and Eminem's The Marshall Mathers LP), the buzz on Xzibit's third record is deafening and that's even before the music begins. The intro to Restless is a blur of testimonials proclaiming the Likwit Crew rapper's credentials as the most likely to. And on this Dr. Dre executive-produced album, the gravel-voiced battle-rhymer barks with stentorian authority like a platoon leader in the midst of pitched urban warfare. Opener "Front 2 Back" kicks off with a blast of custom car hydraulics and backs it up with sucker punch strings. "U Know" features a shaky, jalopy-piano of the kind found in Wild West saloons and a cameo from Dr. Dre, claiming to be "Doc Holliday in the flesh". The Snoop-guesting "D.N.A. (Drugs-N-Alkahol)" uncoils like distressed space funk; and Slim Shady steals the show on "Don't Approach Me" as he tries to make timely sense of suicide attempts and parking lot altercations in the media glare, coming to the conclusion that his eventual end lies in sharp-shooting the world from a rooftop lair. "Rimz & Tirez" is a lowrider's wet dream loaded with a trunk of funk and Kokane's Curtis Mayfield-like falsetto wail. On "Fuckin You Right", X gleefully runs down a PlaySkool roll call of one-night stands, while "Best Of Things" is a trademark Dre production, all forceful strings stabs, metred beats and sing-song chorus. Jim Hall Jim Hall and Pat MethenySe flere produkter fra AmazonThe presence of Pat Metheny on Jim Hall's 1998 By Arrangement fulfilled the younger guitarist's long-standing dream of recording with Hall. But these duets confirm how beautiful their performing together could become. Unlike many encounters between high-profile guitarists, these recordings, from both a New York studio and a Pittsburgh concert, show no sense of competition or interest in displays of empty virtuosity. Instead, the CD's true to the enduring spirit of Hall's music, emphasizing interaction and a subtle complexity. Hall plays the lightly amplified electric guitar that is his trademark, with a gorgeous liquid tone, while Metheny brings a bevy of instruments to the meeting, including a standard electric (no synth), several acoustics--including a fretless classical--and his 42-string model for some remarkably harp-like effects. There's tremendous variety in the music and thought in the choices of tunes and approaches. "The Birds and the Bees", played in memory of its composer, the late guitarist Attila Zoller, has a haunting depth, while the frequently played "Summertime" achieves a new identity in Metheny's arrangement, with spare and vibrant lead contrasting with animated rhythm guitar. Both musicians are adept composers, and highlights include Metheny's "Ballad X" and Hall's increasingly propulsive "Cold Spring". Given that Hall participated in one of the first recorded examples of free improvisation, "Free Form" with the Chico Hamilton Quintet in 1955, and Metheny has recorded with the British avant-gardist Derek Bailey, it's fitting that the two guitarists test the limits of their empathy in five brief and intriguing collective improvisations that sometimes explore unusual textures and microtonal harmonies. Whatever the material, though, the earmarks of the set are a quiet energy and a sustained lyric invention that invite and reward repeated listenings. Madonna American LifeSe flere produkter fra AmazonHaving reinvented herself for the umpteenth time on her last album of jittery electronic effects and shuffling beats, American Life, finds the Queen of Pop in familiar territory and in a self-obsessed mood. Keeping with the Music formula and utilising the talent of French production-wizard Mirwais Ahmadzai has resulted in an album rich in delightful digital disco rhythms, exuberant electro and shattered beats. In the main, Mirwais' magic makes for spellbinding music; unfortunate then that the 44-year-old mum's self indulgent ramblings induce a less pleasurable stupor. The single "American Life" swaggers along with a jaunty cyber strut, while Madge offers us a witty lyrical dismantling of fame and the attendant somewhat soulless "luxuries". It's hard too feel too much sympathy though and her incessant first-person references (nearly 350 of them) begin to grate even before she announces "I am so stupid 'cause I used to be in a fuzzy dream". As well as sarcastic attacks on the fame machine she has so cleverly oiled during her 21-year tenure as music's monarch, Madge is quick to defend her relationship with a sprinkling of odes to current squeeze Guy Ritchie. Subtle and tender acoustic-based moments such as "X-Static Process" and "Nothing Fails" and the string-led beauty of "Easy Ride" add variety while truculent tracks such as "Hollywood" make for a mixed bag, but one that certainly swings in style. -- Christopher Barrett Fragt: Ukendt! |
